Resilience

Emotional Recognition Students focus on developing a deeper understanding of their emotions, feelings and behavioural responses. Empathy is a key focus, with students developing and identifying the links between their behaviours and others emotions and feelings.

Learning in Blackwood’s unique setting highlights the importance for different relationships and the development of trust within a student’s broader community.

Personal Strengths Students are supported to identify their strengths but also understand areas in which they can continue to improve. This is done through the opportunity to experience a vast array of tailored activities within their program.

Students are given the opportunity to experience said activities with the focus on not only encouraging the further development of skills but also highlighting their strengths.

Challenge Students are encouraged to extend their comfort zone through a diverse range of programs. With support, students are nurtured through physical and challenging aspects of a task and are encouraged to believe in themselves and what they can achieve. Once a student has gained personal confidence and a belief in themselves we see barriers start to break down and students achieve their educational goals.

Exploration We strive to break down all physical barriers by adapting programs, equipment and mindsets to allow every student to take part in an inclusive program that offers them opportunities to explore. Students are given opportunities to experience a variety of adventure based activities in a bush environment, whilst also engaging in a social setting. It is through these new and unique experiences that students are challenged to be curious, use their imagination and develop lifelong skills for an independent future.

Acknowledgment to Country

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people who are the traditional Owners of the country we work on and recognize their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. I’d also like to acknowledge the deep knowledge systems and the amazing ability of first nations peoples to pass that knowledge through generations, as incredible teachers themselves.

Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre is a DET Victorian school campus that embraces inclusion and respect for all special school students. Any donations are greatly appreciated and go directly to improving learning outcomes and opportunities for our students.
